The Burning of the Clocks

The Burning of the Clocks

Thursday 21 December
CHURCH STREET, BRIGHTON - 6pm - 2 Hours
Brighton Photography Group
Tobias Slater-Hunt
Burning the Clocks is a unique community event held on the 21st of December, created by Same Sky, that brings the whole city together to mark the shortest day of the year. Local people make their own paper and willow lanterns, using our kits, and after parading through the city, they pass them into a blazing bonfire on Brighton beach, as a token of the year's end. The annual event brings the city together to celebrate the shortest day of the year and provide an antidote to the excesses of Christmas with a different theme every year. This year's theme is Clocks, which will be reflected in the lanterns made by the community for the parade. This theme was inspired by our changing perception of time's passage after the event's successful return last winter.
A fabulous photographic opportunity, and a great chance to hone street photography and low light photography skills.
We will even have the opportunity to support future event by buying a beer!

I am used to drawing pets and people, I haven't had any commissions for a while so decided to draw something different. This drawing was inspired by an amazing artist named cj Hendry. I just loved the shine she gets with her colour pencils. I used prismacolors to create mine on claire fontaine pastel mat. I really enjoyed it.

Buddy was a rescue dog, taken in by my grandparents in 2013. He was a black labrador with a very big heart. He was very good at stealing my grandparents possessions and not letting them go until he got a treat. He enjoyed his walks with my grandad, they became best pals. He was so gentle and loved to play. Unfortunately he ended up getting poorly, his back legs were full of arthritis. This led to him not being able to move and my grandparents struggled to lift him to take him out for the t

After spending some time in Manchester and Bolton, trading at markets, I got a real feel for the pride they have for their music scene, it made me realise how much times have changed too back in the 90s, in Oasis' prime, people who went to see them at festivals, went because they LOVED them and would do anything to get tickets. These days music is so accessible that you can dabble in thousands of different artists, when you attend festivals, it's usually to see a range of artists you like, or

In nature, I wait patiently for just the right moment, one that is different but unique to my subject. It?s those unusual positions during grooming, mating ritual, breeding display, or just being silly. I strive to capture the moment that others miss, don?t see or notice. I?ll then use my photography as reference to create, produce and share an art piece that allows others a glimpse into that secret world of lines, colors and details that I see. This Sandhill Crane fit that bill perfectly. As we had the arrival of snow this week I thought it would be perfect to create a nice winter scene, this one came out of my mind rather than a reference photo, so it?s of no particular place other than some music, a paintbrush and a blank canvas. I actually only learnt to paint during lockdown so it?s always really cool when I see the finished product and it looks pretty good.
